SA2501 Overview Map
Prices Fork Road (Route 412/685) from McCoy Road to N. Main Street

Project Purpose

The purpose of this study is to identify project recommendations for the Prices Fork Road (Route 412/685) corridor within the Town of Blacksburg and Montgomery County. This study will focus on improving roadway and pedestrian safety, multimodal accessibility/connectivity (bicyclist, pedestrian, and transit), and transportation demand management (TDM) needs. The project recommendations from this study may be developed into funding applications for SMART SCALE Round 7 and other transportation funding programs.

Survey

The Phase 2 survey regarding proposed alternatives for the Prices Fork Road (Route 412/685) corridor between McCoy Road and N. Main Street in the Town of Blacksburg and Montgomery County was completed in December 2025. The study team will use the input obtained from the public as it refines the alternatives and performs planning-level cost estimation before selecting the preferred alternative(s) to address the identified needs.

Prices Fork Road at West Campus Drive/Woodland Drive

Widening of eastbound Prices Fork Road is proposed to provide a bike lane along the eastbound right-turn lane to West Campus Drive. This would provide a continuous bike lane along eastbound Prices Fork Road.

Left turns from westbound Prices Fork Road to West Campus Drive would only be allowed during a green arrow in the evening hours to reduce the potential for angle crashes. During other times of day, the flashing yellow arrow phase would be available.

Prices Fork Road at McBryde Drive

A Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT) is proposed at the McBryde Drive and Virginia Tech Parking (Prices Fork parking lots and Perry Street Parking Garage) median opening which would prohibit left turns onto Prices Fork Road from both McBryde Drive and Virginia Tech Parking.

Left turns from McBryde Drive would be diverted to Kelsey Lane and Toms Creek Road to access Prices Fork Road. Left turns from Virginia Tech Parking would be diverted to the Toms Creek Road intersection to make U-turns.

This improvement will reduce conflict points and the potential for angle crashes.

Flashing yellow arrow left-turn signals are proposed for left turns on all four approaches to the intersection to improve safety for left-turning vehicles.

Reconfiguring and signalizing the eastbound right-turn lane is proposed to improve pedestrian safety by eliminating the free-flow right-turn lane.

The sidewalk areas on the northwest, southwest, and southeast corners of the intersection are proposed to be enlarged to provide additional space for pedestrians to wait to cross at the intersection and increase pedestrian safety.

Prices Fork Road at Orchard Street

A marked crosswalk and pedestrian hybrid beacon are proposed across the west leg of the Orchard Street intersection to provide a safe place for pedestrians to cross Prices Fork Road. A pedestrian hybrid beacon is a traffic control device that provides red lights for motorists to stop when pedestrians are crossing.

This improvement would include closing the eastbound left-turn lane and prohibiting left turns to Orchard Street to provide a pedestrian refuge along Prices Fork Road. Left turns to Orchard Street would be diverted to the roundabout at North Main Street to make U-turns back to Prices Fork Road or would be diverted to other alternate routes.

Existing 5-foot sidewalks are proposed to be widened to 10 feet from just west of Webb Street to just east of Orchard Street to increase available space for pedestrians traveling along Prices Fork Road and increase pedestrian safety.
