Project Purpose

The purpose of this study is to identify project recommendations for the Roanoke Street (Route 11/Route 460 Business) corridor within the Town of Christiansburg. This study will focus on improving roadway safety, reliability, multimodal accessibility/connectivity (bicycle, pedestrian, and transit), and transportation demand management needs. The project recommendations from this study may be developed into funding applications for SMART SCALE Round 6 and other transportation funding programs.

  • Additional storage along Roanoke Street for both the eastbound and westbound left-turn lanes to the US 460 Bypass ramps

Roanoke Street from east of the US 460 Bypass to Houchins Road - Access Management and Pedestrian Improvements

  • Access management improvements are proposed along Roanoke Street to close commercial entrances in various locations.
  • An RCUT, or restricted crossing U-turn is proposed at the Houchins Road intersection that will prohibit left turns from Houchins Road.
  • A partial Thru-Cut is proposed at the Industrial Drive intersection that will allow left turns to and from Industrial Drive.
  • A right-turn lane is proposed from Industrial Drive to Roanoke Street.
  • Raised medians are proposed from west of Motor Lane to Houchins Road.
  • New sidewalk is proposed along the north and south sides of Roanoke Street from the US 460 Bypass Interchange to Industrial Drive to connect existing and recently constructed segments of sidewalk to create continuous paths for pedestrians.
  • A signalized pedestrian crosswalk is proposed across Roanoke Street at the intersection with the US 460 Bypass Westbound Ramps that will be activated by pushbuttons.

Roanoke Street at I-81 Northbound Off-Ramp Interchange Improvements

  • The lanes on eastbound Roanoke Street at the I-81 interchange will be reconfigured to improve sight distance and allow for safer left and right turns from the off-ramp from northbound I-81.
  • Drivers in the right-hand lane approaching the loop ramp to northbound I-81 will be required to exit onto the loop ramp to northbound I-81. A larger concrete island is proposed that will give right turns from the northbound I-81 off-ramp a lane to turn into on eastbound Roanoke Street without stopping.
