RI2503 Overview Map

Intersection of U.S. 58 (Clarksville Bypass) and U.S. 15 (Virginia Avenue)

Project Purpose

The purpose of this study is to evaluate cost-effective alternatives that address the identified VTrans needs (safety, corridor preservation, and access) at the intersection of U.S. 58 (Clarksville Bypass) and U.S. 15 (Virginia Avenue). The study location has been identified in VTrans as a Distressed area.

Survey

The Phase 2 survey regarding proposed alternatives for the intersection of the Clarksville Bypass and Virginia Avenue in the Town of Clarksville was completed in March 2026. The study team will use the input obtained from the public as it refines the alternatives and performs planning-level cost estimation before selecting the preferred alternative(s) to address the identified needs.

Alternative 1: Two-Way Stop along U.S. 58 and U.S. 15

The following proposed improvements would reduce speed-related crashes and improve driver decision making by reducing the number of decisions that need to be made. This includes:

  • Relocating stop signs at the intersection of U.S. 58 and U.S. 15 to stop traffic along U.S. 15 instead of U.S. 58
  • Relocating the overhead caution lights to be positioned before the intersection, where drivers have clear line of sight as they drive up to the intersection.

Please rate Alternative 1, proposing a two-way stop control along U.S. 58 and U.S. 15. (157 responses)

Alternative 2A: Intersection Tightening with Two-Way Stop along U.S. 58 and U.S. 15

The following proposed improvements will reduce speed-related crashes and improve driver decision making by reducing the number of decisions that need to be made. This includes:

  • Adding raised medians
  • Extending curbs
  • Reducing the width of the intersection
  • Enhancing intersection lighting
  • Eliminating the left turn lane along U.S. 58 and U.S. 15
  • Improving driver visibility and line of sight by gently straightening the right turn lane
  • Relocating the overhead caution lights to be positioned before the intersection, where drivers have clear line of sight as they drive up.
