Public information meetings were held on September 19 and 20, 2022, about a preliminary transportation study assessing potential safety and operational improvements along Route 199 (Humelsine Parkway), between Brookwood Drive and John Tyler Highway (Route 5) in James City County and Williamsburg. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze transportation issues along this corridor and its intersections, with a focus on congestion mitigation, safety improvements, and enhanced pedestrian, bicycle and transit access. This analysis of the Route 199 corridor also includes potential improvements at the Route 199 intersections at Brookwood Drive, Jamestown Road, John Tyler Highway, as well as John Tyler Lane at John Tyler Highway. The potential improvements presented are only preliminary and are not scheduled or funded as a construction project at this time. The study partners may consider the improvements for possible advancement through future local, regional, state and federal transportation funding programs.
Route 199 Project Pipeline Study Presentation
The survey regarding potential transportation safety and operational improvements along Route 199 (Humelsine Parkway) between Route 5 (John Tyler Highway) and Brookwood Drive, including the intersections at Jamestown Road and John Tyler Lane, in James City County is complete.
The purpose of this study will be to analyze the operational and safety issues identified along Route 199 (Humelsine Parkway) between Jamestown Road and John Tyler Highway, with a focus on providing enhanced pedestrian, bicycle, and transit access. The Humelsine Parkway corridor has a high number of rear-end crashes related to PM congestion and two District PSI intersections at Jamestown Road (District rank 17, TSN) and John Tyler Highway (District rank 47). A pedestrian-involved crash occurred at Route 199 and John Tyler Highway resulting in a pedestrian fatality. Dedicated bike lane facility is present along John Tyler Lane. Williamsburg Area Transit Authority Route 6 (Jamestown) serves the study area with hourly transit service. The objective of this study is to identify cost-effective preferred improvement alternatives that address the deficient conditions and prioritize safety for vulnerable users.
