NV-25-01: Sudley Manor Drive - Prince William County

NV2501 Overview Map

Prince William Parkway to Sudley Road

Project Purpose

The purpose of this study is to assess key areas of Sudley Manor Drive from Prince William Parkway to Sudley Road. The study will focus on improving safety, mitigating congestion, preserving capacity (to keep traffic flowing smoothly), multimodal accessibility/connectivity (bicycle, pedestrian and transit), and transportation demand management (TDM) needs.

Survey

The Phase 2 survey regarding proposed alternatives for Sudley Manor Drive (Route 1566) from Prince William Parkway (Route 234) to Sudley Road (Route 234 Business) in Prince William County was completed in February 2026. The study team will use the input obtained from the public as it refines the alternatives and performs planning-level cost estimation before selecting the preferred alternative(s) to address the identified needs.

Section 1: Ashton Avenue Intersection at Sudley Manor Drive

Current Conditions:

  • Many reported crashes happened during hours when there is low light resulting in angle crashes or “T-bone” crashes.
  • Numerous vehicles want to turn right or left resulting in long delays and blocked travel lanes.
  • Drivers often cannot see oncoming traffic in right-turn areas as they must turn their head over their shoulder to see.
  • Pedestrians must cross channelized right-turn lanes where turning vehicles may be traveling at higher rates of speed.
  • Sidewalks at the intersection do not have up-to-date accessible features.

Alternative: Dual Left-Turn Lanes, Sudley Manor Restriping & Dedicated Right Turn Lanes

Improvements:

The study team evaluated measures to improve safety, operations, and mobility at the intersection of Ashton Avenue and Sudley Manor Drive. This process resulted in multiple proposed improvements that could be implemented in phases. All scenarios include a new traffic signal with better street lighting to improve safety, particularly at night and new pedestrian signals with upgraded accessible ramps and sidewalks at each corner of the intersection. The proposed improvements include:

  1. Dedicated right-turn lanes on Ashton Avenue: A separate space for right-turning vehicles to reduce wait times and crash risk between slower moving right-turn vehicles and faster moving through vehicles.
  2. Reconfiguration of one eastbound travel lane to a right-turn lane on Sudley Manor Drive: Repurpose a lane to match drivers' expectations and provide a dedicated space for right-turning vehicles to reduce wait times and crash risk.
  3. Improved right-turn areas: Realign right-turn slip-lanes so drivers have a better view of oncoming traffic and pedestrians, decreasing turning speeds to reduce crash risk between vehicles and pedestrians.
  4. Dual left-turn lanes on Ashton Avenue: Provide an additional lane for left-turning vehicles in each direction on Ashton Avenue to reduce wait times and lane blocking.
  5. Extended left-turn lane on eastbound Sudley Manor Drive:  A longer turn lane for left-turning vehicles to reduce lane blocking on Sudley Manor Drive.

Section 2: Sudley Manor Drive from Chatsworth Drive to Sudley Road

Alternative: Shared-Use Path along eastbound Sudley Manor Drive

Improvements:

  • Build missing connections: There is no sidewalk or path between Chatsworth Drive and Wallace Lane. The proposed shared-use path would provide the missing connection.
  • More Space: The existing path ends west of Chatsworth Drive and transitions to a narrower sidewalk at Wallace Lane. The shared-use path would be 10 feet wide (where right of way permits) to provide room for pedestrians and cyclists to use and pass each other safely.
  • Accessibility: Updates at intersection crossings will be made to meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility standards.
