Project Purpose
The focus of this study is to assess the key areas of US Route 50/Arlington Boulevard between Fillmore Street and N. Pershing Drive and on VA Route 27/Washington Boulevard between Columbia Pike and N. Pershing Drive in Arlington County. The study will seek to identify ways to improve safety for all users, and bicycle, pedestrian, and transit mobility throughout the study area. Transportation demand management, capacity preservation, and congestion mitigation will also be key components of the study.

Bicycle & Pedestrian Improvements
- Construct a separated shared use path (SUP) on Washington Boulevard
- Relocate current bicycle and pedestrian traffic off the overpass and reroute users through a new signalized crossing
- Relocate existing on-street parking to the service road less than 300 feet away
Do you believe that the safety improvements provided by the proposed new shared use path (SUP) location are worth relocating on-street parking from Washington Boulevard to the service road?
| Option | Result |
|---|---|
| Yes | 88% |
| No | 12% |
Please rate the proposed improvement that would construct a separated shared use path (SUP), which would reroute bicyclists and pedestrians through a new signalized crossing and relocate on-street parking to the service road.
| 1. Strongly oppose | 2. Somewhat oppose | 3. Neutral | 4. Somewhat support | 5. Strongly support | |

Roadway Improvements
Alternative A: Double Left Turn Lane from Southbound Washington Boulevard & Signalized Intersection for Traffic Heading Westbound on Arlington Boulevard
- Relocate the shared use path (SUP)
- Add a new traffic signal for access between the Washington Boulevard on- and off-ramps and westbound Arlington Boulevard, and remove and relocate the on-street parking on the southbound side of Washington Boulevard
- Close the service road ramp from westbound Arlington Boulevard and add on-street parking along the service road
- Add a new partial traffic signal for northbound and southbound traffic on Washington Boulevard to access westbound Arlington Boulevard
- Add a new partial traffic signal for eastbound traffic on Arlington Boulevard exiting to southbound Washington Boulevard
Alternative B: Double Left Turn Lane from Southbound Washington Boulevard & Signalized Intersection for Traffic Heading Westbound on Arlington Boulevard with Lane Drop on Eastbound Arlington Boulevard
Alternative B is similar to Alternative A, except as noted below.
- Drop one lane on eastbound Arlington Boulevard at the first exit ramp
- Add one lane back in for the entrance ramp serving northbound Washington Boulevard to eastbound Arlington Boulevard
Alternative C: Single Left Turn Lane from Southbound Washington Boulevard & Entrance Ramp (No Yield) for Traffic Heading Westbound on Arlington Boulevard
Alternative C is similar to Alternatives A and B, except as noted below.
- Drop one lane on eastbound Arlington Boulevard at the first exit ramp (as in Alternative B)
- Make the outermost lane on westbound Arlington Boulevard an exit lane and drop the lane at the off-ramp to Washington Boulevard
- Provide a continuous lane on an on-loop ramp for traffic entering westbound Arlington Boulevard from Washington Boulevard (bringing the total number of lanes back to three in the westbound direction)
Alternative D: Full Stop Controlled Intersections for Traffic Entering Eastbound Arlington Boulevard
Alternative D is similar to Alternative A for westbound traffic and exiting eastbound traffic.
Alternative D would modify the merge areas for traffic entering from Washington Boulevard to eastbound Arlington Boulevard to improve safety and access. The on-ramps would intersect with Arlington Boulevard at 90-degree angles.
- Install a stop sign at the intersection of the southbound Washington Boulevard on-ramp and eastbound Arlington Boulevard
- Install a stop sign at the intersection of the northbound Washington Boulevard on-ramp and eastbound Arlington Boulevard
Alternative E: Green-T Signalized Intersection & Full Stop Controlled Intersection
Alternative E is similar to Alternative A for westbound traffic.
- Remove the off-loop ramp from eastbound Arlington Boulevard to northbound Washington Boulevard and relocate traffic to share the eastbound off-ramp for southbound Washington Boulevard (combining all the eastbound traffic exiting from Arlington Boulevard to Washington Boulevard to use the current off ramp)
- Add a new traffic signal for traffic heading to northbound Washington Boulevard to provide for a left turn at a Green-T intersection, allowing for uninterrupted flow on the northbound lanes with a merge for traffic coming off the ramp
- Provide a stop-controlled intersection on the on-ramp for southbound traffic on Washington Boulevard to access eastbound Arlington Boulevard (as in Alternative D)
- Add an acceleration lane to improve the merge at the current ramp from northbound Washington Boulevard to eastbound Arlington Boulevard
Please rank the alternatives for improving the grade-separated interchange at US Route 50/Arlington Boulevard and VA Route 27/Washington Boulevard.
| Option | Result |
|---|---|
| Alternative C: Single Left Turn Lane from Southbound Washington Boulevard & Entrance Ramp (No Yield) for Traffic Heading Westbound on Arlington Boulevard | 73% |
| Alternative A: Double Left Turn Lane from Southbound Washington Boulevard & Signalized Intersection for Traffic Heading Westbound on Arlington Boulevard | 71% |
| Alternative B: Double Left Turn Lane from Southbound Washington Boulevard & Signalized Intersection for Traffic Heading Westbound on Arlington Boulevard with Lane Drop on Eastbound Arlington Boulevard | 68% |
| Alternative E: Green-T Signalized Intersection & Full Stop Controlled Intersection | 59% |
| Alternative D: Full Stop Controlled Intersections for Traffic Entering Eastbound Arlington Boulevard | 58% |
