The survey regarding potential transportation safety and operational improvements along Battlefield Boulevard (Route 168 BUS) starting south of I-64 between Wal Mart Way and Gainsborough Square in Chesapeake is complete.

Project Purpose

The purpose of this study will be to analyze the operational and safety issues identified along Route 168 BUS (Battlefield Boulevard) between Wal Mart Way and Gainsborough Square, with a focus on providing enhanced pedestrian, bicycle, and transit access. This corridor has a high number of rear-end crashes related to congestion and a high number of angle crashes at both signalized and unsignalized intersections. There are a notable number of crashes involving pedestrians and cyclists, including a crash where a cyclist was killed by a motorist in 2020. The surrounding area sees an influx of over 93,000 commuters, which places stress on the corridor and leads to significant congestion during AM and PM rush hours. Travel patterns on the corridor are also tied to operations on Route 168 and I-64. The objective of this study is to identify cost-effective preferred improvement alternatives that address the deficient conditions and prioritize safety for vulnerable users.
